China’s People’s Liberation Army has begun expansive live-fire military drills encircling Taiwan, in a move Beijing says tests combat readiness and sends a ‘stern warning’ to separatist forces and external powers
China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, dramatically escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced the start of its “Justice Mission 2025” drills on Monday, deploying warships, aircraft, rocket units and artillery in extensive live-fire exercises aimed at testing joint combat capabilities and signalling Beijing’s resolve against moves toward Taiwanese independenceAccording to Chinese state media and military spokespeople, the exercises involve coordinated air, naval and ground forces operating around multiple zones surrounding the self-ruled island. The drills are designed to rehearse sea-air combat readiness, simulated strikes, blockade tactics and deterrence operations reflecting China’s evolving military doctrine.Beijing describes the operation as a necessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty and deliver a “stern warning” to both pro-independence elements in Taiwan and foreign powers it accuses of interfering in its internal affairs. Chinese officials have framed the exercises as a response to recent political developments, including heightened cooperation between Taiwan and allies such as the United States.Taipei has strongly condemned the drills.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense reported detecting dozens of PLA aircraft and naval vessels operating near the island’s airspace and maritime areas, some approaching its contiguous zone. In response, Taiwan placed its forces on high alert and carried out rapid response drills to reinforce its readiness. Officials in Taipei called the manoeuvres “provocative” and detrimental to regional stability. The exercises have also affected civilian life. Several international flight corridors were disrupted, forcing airlines to reroute or cancel flights through airspace around Taiwan for safety reasonsInternational reaction remains cautious but watchful.
Analysts note that these are some of the most comprehensive military drills conducted near Taiwan in recent years and could signal a shift toward more assertive posturing by Beijing. Observers warn that such activities risk heightening geopolitical tensions in East Asia and beyond.
